Well, the other day, at the aromi restaurant, our favorite waitress disclosed in the process of describing the night’s specials, that provolone is smoked mozzarella . . . whoa! . . . wait a minute! . . . hold the phone! . . . provolone is smoked mozzarella .. . since 1972, when we first started getting hoagies at franks hoagie hut in Houston, we have loved provolone, but we never realized provolone was smoked mozzarella . . . dang . . . .

Now today, at lunch at Las Adelitas here in Prague, we asked the waiter if they had posole today (because we had been told before that they only had posole at lunch, not at dinner), and he said, “no, only on Thursday” then he went on to say they (Mexicans) called it Huevos Posole . . . wait a minute! . . . hold the phone! What has posole got to do with eggs? Oh- no – not huevos (and we don’t pronounce the H, he told me with kind condescension), huevas, Thursday. . . What ? Thursday in Spanish is Huevas? How could we not know this? But then we couldn’t think of any other day names in Spanish . . . We could come up with Mardi Gras in French is Fat Tuesday, and that Spanish would be sort of close to French, prob’ly . . . but no others . .. so I looked it up, Monday thru Sunday en espanol:

Lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado, domingo

Lunes is obvious from Luna, Moonday,

Martes is close to Mardi, as we expected

Jueves is close enough to huevas for us,

Sabado is like soboto in Czech and sabata in Italian, Shabat (sabbath) in Hebrew . . .

But

Domingo, as in Santo Domingo?

Well that’s a puzzler . . . 8^D

But we figger if we’re still learning we aint dead yet . . . .

CPT's Vacation Story

This is not my story to tell . . . but since it is unlikely I will be able to throw a party and invite CPT to tell her story, I will tell it, after all . . .

CPT is from Malaysia. She went back home couple of months ago for her brother’s wedding. Then, she took her Mom on a kind of safari in Borneo, to a Jungle Resort, where you stay out in this giant treehouse out in the Rain Forest, very nice she assures me . . . they were out in the jungle with a tour guide and a Japanese couple, out on foot from the boat which had carried them up river, when she heard the Japanese couple excitedly vocalizing loudly . . . yelling in fear, you might say . . . so CPT told her mom, “we should go back to the boat”.

Then suddenly the Japanese woman of the couple broke into the clearing in a run, huffing frantically, and right behind her was an elephant, ears flapping aggressively, so CPT turnt and ran too . . . reached the boat first – with the elephant trumpeting angrily behind them – and decided on the spur of the moment to jump into the boat, so as not to delay the Japanese couple . . . she didn’t want them to get trampled while she climbed into the boat . . .

The boat had two levels, her mom was already in the boat, up by the bow, on the lower level, and CPT jumped from the bank down to the upper level of the boat, then planned to jump again to the lower level, leaving time & room for the Japanese couple to climb in . . . the elephant, meanwhile, is trumpeting and tramping around the dock, making sure they didn’t come back – protecting her infant dumbo, if you see how I mean: the Japanese couple had accidentally gotten to close to the dumbo, so the mother charged. . . they all tho’t they were gonna die, that the elephant would kill them . . . and wouldn’t anyone? . . . 8^D . . .

CPT’s mom is yelling at her to be more careful, not so reckless, not so hasty . . . she hadn’t seen anything, didn’t realize the elephantine danger . . . Meanwhile, CPT is hurt. When she jumped to the first level, her flip-flops broke and she lost her footing and fell down onto the lower level, scraping her leg terribly – bleeding . . . no sympathy there . . .

She went to some shaman, healer her mother knew who used ancient oriental medicine (that apparently involves hands, but no actual touching), and he promised her leg would heal next day . . . CPT remains unconvinced . . . the Japanese woman, turns out, was a nurse, and she gave CPT a plaster she feels was more effective . . . but that’s CPT, one foot in Borneo, the other in Prague . . . 8^D . . .

Yeh, but then CPT said, “That elephant was as big as me!” . . . what? Wait a minute, What? Was it a baby? No it was protecting a baby . . . huh?

“it was some kinda of small elephant,” said CPT, “not as big as Indian or African . . . . a pigmy? Elephant”

“Oh, Oh, Oh!” gee, that kinda changes the story some . . . I mean, if you say you are chased by a pygmy elephant, then it just doesn’t convey the same level of OMG, you have to admit . . . 8^D . . . still . . . you still would run for your life, wouldn’t you?

It's yet another humorous gaffe by the Harvard graduate, overlooked by most media for whatever reason. Like Obama saying Abraham-Come-Lately Lincoln was the founder of the Republican Party. Or Navy corpseman. Or the Austrian language. Fifty-seven states. The president of Canada. Etc.

J'aime les relations. Je veux dire, chaque personnage a sa propre histoire. Le chiot est un peu trop, mais vous avez plus de regarder les choses comme ça dans ce genre de tableaux. Slowing Down to the Speed of Dark

According to Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, time slows down for something as it approaches the speed of light. So what does it mean if time seems to be going faster, as it does for me? Am I slowing down towards the speed of dark? This year has certainly flashed by at an alarming rate – like a dropout on an analogue videotape. My life, and my career in modern broadcast engineering, is a mere blip on the radar screen of eternity.

If years don’t last like they used to, then all the more effort should be made to record the significant events for posterity, lest these shrinking time units we call years disappear altogether in some kind of Einsteinian wormhole vortex black hole thingy.

So what should we record in our journals on the subject of “2010: the significant events and occur rences affecting television broadcast technologists”? Here follows my list.

Mrs was walking out of the Bila grocery store the other day . . . since it was our Anniversary Eve, she was loaded down a little bit, and the security guard for the apartment complex said something to her that she heard as “Tiskat Tasket” . . .

We worried it, but my colleague at work, my frequent interpreter of all things Czech, finally puzzled out, he must have been saying “Tetsky Tatsky” which means, “Heavy Basket” . . . he was asking her if she wanted help carrying it . . . 8^D . . . but she just said “Ne, Diky” and scurried up to the apartment.

Today at the Modigliani exhibit, the guard at the Entrance said something to her about her Tatsky, and instead of Freaking out she just showed her handbag to him to scan . . . . 8^D

But, like Ahoy from Ahoj, from the Czech via the Latin, Ad Honorem Jesu’, could A Tisket, A Tasket, be from the “Tetsky Tatsky”?

It’s all too, too droll to contemplate….

But never mind that . Look at her pre-hensile toes. I wisht I was back in PHX where a fellow could ogle a few toes all year round, unlike in PRG where half the year one is reduced to ogling snow boots.

I mean, just to dig a little deeper hole for myself, what is the meaning for such toes? I immediately extrapolate conclusions about the population at large from such an egregious example, but I recognize it is not a scientific approach.

I've tried to photo this bridge a couple of times now, once from a moving car and this time from the train to Dresden . . .I think the town is Lovosice . . . I acknowledge that my attempts fail to capture what an awesome, beautiful bridge it is, sensuous in all its structural integrity, as I have implied, in a Georgia O'Keefe way. . . I'm amazed at the engineer's thinking out of the box to make only support on one end, not two, nor in the middle, and to have such lovely, graceful curves.

Ok. We were in Dresden. These are the old Slaughter Houses -- or at least where they used to be . . . this is all some sort of concert Halle now . . . But we had to take at least one picture to make the trip out to Messe-Dresden worth it . . . we don't care if the bus driver that dropped us off there at the end of the line when everything was closed thinks we were nuts when we got back on 10 minutes later when he resumed his route . . . as long as we don't think so.

these are two tracks under repair . . . the coming and going, if you see what I mean . . .they should eventually connect up . . .we saw this as we rode the Tram22 down Vyseradska just after we left Karlovo Namesti . . . so . . . either they haven't planned very well, or else they will be tearing up the track that the 22 goes down, to rebuild this interchange . . . possibly the busiest tram in prague, which would mean that they didn't plan very well . . . I just think its funny . . .
